      What is minimalist wall art?

      Minimalist wall art strips a composition back to the fewest elements that still hold a wall - a single line, a shape, a horizon, a wash of colour, and a lot of deliberate empty space. It is not the same as small: a minimalist piece is often physically large, because the negative space needs room to do its work.

      Is minimalist wall art the same as Japandi?

      They overlap but are not the same thing. Minimalism is about reduction - the fewest elements that still hold a wall. Japandi is a specific interior style blending Japanese restraint with Scandinavian warmth, which adds natural tones, wood and a softness that minimalism on its own does not require. Most Japandi wall art is minimalist; plenty of minimalist work is too stark or graphic to be Japandi.

      Can minimalist art work in a room that is not minimalist?

      Yes, and it often works better there. In a busy or heavily patterned room, a quiet piece with a lot of empty space gives the eye somewhere to rest, which stops the wall competing with everything else. Minimalist art in an already-minimal room can tip the space into feeling unfinished rather than calm.

      What size should minimalist wall art be?

      Larger than you would expect. Because so much of the canvas is empty, a minimalist piece needs physical scale to register - 20"x60" (50x150cm) or 24"x72" (60x180cm) above a sofa or bed, rather than the 16"x48" (40x120cm) you might choose for a busier image on the same wall. Undersized minimalist art reads as sparse rather than considered.

      Soft neutrals do most of the work - off-white, chalk, warm beige, pale grey and muted sage. A minimalist piece usually carries one accent tone at most, and the restraint is the point.
