What is abstract art?
Abstract art is work that does not set out to depict a recognisable subject. Instead it uses colour, shape, line and texture as the subject in their own right. That makes it unusually well suited to a long, narrow canvas: with nothing to centre on, the eye follows the composition end to end and reads it as movement rather than as a picture of something.
How do you choose abstract art for a room?
Choose by colour and energy rather than by subject, because there is no subject to like or dislike. Pull one colour from something already in the room - a rug, a cushion, a wood tone - and look for a piece that carries it. Then decide how much movement you want: calm tonal washes settle a room, bold gestural brushwork energises it.
Does abstract art suit a long narrow wall?
Better than most subjects. A landscape or a portrait has a natural focal point that an extreme format can crop awkwardly, but an abstract composition has no fixed centre, so it can be extended across a 24"x72" (60x180cm) canvas without anything looking cut off. The elongation reads as intentional rather than as a crop.
What colours does abstract wall art come in?
The collection runs from calm tonal neutrals - beige, cream, soft grey - through to bold colour-led statement pieces in blue, green, terracotta and black. If you want the art to settle a room, stay in the neutral range; if the room is already quiet and needs a focal point, a single strong-coloured abstract will do more than anything else on the wall.
Is abstract art a safe choice if you are unsure what to buy?
It is one of the safer choices. Because there is no subject to agree or disagree with, abstract work tends to divide opinion less than a figurative print, and it dates more slowly than a trend-led illustration. Stay in a muted palette and pick up a colour already in the room, and it will keep working through repainting and new furniture.
