What is a diptych?
A diptych is a single artwork split across two panels, designed to hang side by side as one composition. It is not two matching pictures - the image continues from one canvas to the next, so the pair reads as a whole. The word comes from the Greek for 'two-folded', originally describing hinged writing tablets.
How far apart should you hang a two-piece wall art set?
Between 2in and 4in (5-10cm). Closer than that and the two panels read as one crowded image; wider and the composition breaks apart. Keep the gap consistent and get the two tops level - a set of two shows any misalignment far more obviously than a single piece does.
What size should a two-piece set be for above a sofa or bed?
Add the two panel widths plus the gap and aim for about two-thirds of the furniture width below. Two 16"x48" (40x120cm) panels hung vertically with a 3in (8cm) gap span roughly 35in (90cm) - right for a two-seater or a double bed. Two 20"x60" (50x150cm) panels span about 43in (110cm), which suits a three-seater or a king bed.
Can you hang the two panels apart rather than side by side?
You can, and it works well either side of a doorway, mirror or window - the two panels frame whatever sits between them. What does not work is splitting a diptych across two different walls: the image is designed to continue across the gap, so separating it too far breaks the composition it was made for.
Is a two-piece set better than one large canvas?
A set gives you more width for the same visual weight, and the vertical break between panels adds a bit of height to the arrangement - useful above a low sofa or a bed with no headboard. A single canvas is simpler to hang and gives a cleaner, quieter result. If the wall is very wide, consider a three-piece set instead.
