Horizontaal
Horizontal wall art - frequently asked questions
What is horizontal wall art?
Horizontal wall art is any piece that is wider than it is tall - also called landscape orientation, or panoramic in the longest formats. We make it in two shapes: a long, slim panoramic run from 8"x24" (20x60cm) up to 24"x72" (60x180cm), and a fuller wide format in 16"x32" (40x80cm), 20"x40" (50x100cm) and 30"x60" (75x150cm). Both suit walls above furniture, where a square print tends to look undersized.
What size horizontal wall art should I get for above a sofa?
Aim for roughly two-thirds the width of the sofa. For a standard three-seater that is usually 20"x60" (50x150cm) or 20"x40" (50x100cm); for a large or corner sofa, 24"x72" (60x180cm) or 30"x60" (75x150cm); for a two-seater or loveseat, 16"x48" (40x120cm) or 16"x32" (40x80cm). Hang the bottom edge 6-10in (15-25cm) above the back of the sofa so the two read as one arrangement.
Does horizontal wall art make a room look bigger?
It makes a room read as wider. A long horizontal canvas draws the eye side to side, which visually stretches the wall it hangs on - useful in a narrow living room, above a low sideboard, or in any space where the ceiling feels high relative to the floor area. If your problem is the opposite and the room feels squat, a tall vertical piece will do more for you.
What is the difference between horizontal and panoramic wall art?
Panoramic is simply a more extreme horizontal. Both are landscape orientation, but panoramic describes proportions where the width is several times the height - our 24"x72" (60x180cm) and 20"x60" (50x150cm) sizes sit firmly in panoramic territory. In practice the words are used interchangeably by most retailers, so search for either.
Where should you hang horizontal wall art besides above the sofa?
Anywhere the wall is wider than it is tall: above a bed or headboard, over a sideboard or console table, above a dining table, along the wall of a hallway, or in the run of space above a kitchen worktop. The rule is the same each time - keep the piece to about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it and leave a hand's width of clear wall at each end.
