It depends what the art hangs above. On a narrow wall beside a wardrobe or in an alcove, a vertical 12"x36" (30x90cm) or 16"x48" (40x120cm) fits without crowding the room.
What colours of wall art are best for a bedroom?
Muted, low-contrast palettes work best - soft neutrals, sage and olive greens, dusty blues, warm beige and blush. These read as restful rather than stimulating, which matters more in a bedroom than in any other room. Save the high-contrast blacks and bright primaries for a hallway or home office where you want the wall to wake you up rather than settle you down.
Where should you hang art in a bedroom other than above the bed?
The wall facing the bed, so it is the first thing you see in the morning; the narrow strip beside a wardrobe or door; above a chest of drawers or dressing table; and either side of the bed as a matching pair in place of a single piece. A tall vertical canvas suits the wardrobe gap; a long horizontal one suits the space above a chest of drawers.
Should bedroom art match the bedding or the walls?
Neither, exactly. Pick up one tone from the room - a wood finish, a cushion, the wall colour - and echo it in the frame or in a secondary colour in the artwork, rather than matching the dominant colour outright. Matching too closely makes the art disappear; picking up a single shared note ties the room together while letting the piece still register as art.
