What size coastal wall art works above a sofa or bed?
20"x60" (50x150cm) or 30"x60" (75x150cm) above a three-seater sofa or a king bed, and 16"x48" (40x120cm) or 20"x40" (50x100cm) above a two-seater or a double. Coastal scenes gain from width more than almost any other subject - the horizon needs room to run - so if you are choosing between two sizes on a wide wall, take the larger.
Does coastal wall art only suit a seaside home?
No. Coastal work reads as calm rather than as themed, particularly in the muted end of the palette - chalk, sand, sea green and soft grey. It is the nautical motifs, not the sea itself, that make a room look holiday-let. A misty estuary or a plain horizon sits perfectly well in an inland city flat.
What colours does coastal wall art come in?
Mostly sand, chalk, sea green, soft grey and deep blue - the natural palette of a shoreline. Paler pieces keep a room feeling open and airy; deeper blues and greys give a wall more weight and work better against white walls or in a north-facing room that needs contrast rather than more light.
Where does coastal art work in a house?
Bedrooms and bathrooms first - the calm palette suits both - then above a sofa in a living room where you want the space to feel more open. It also works unusually well in a hallway, where a long horizontal seascape gives a windowless space an implied view. Keep the more literal beach scenes out of a formal dining room.
Is canvas suitable for a bathroom?
In a well-ventilated bathroom with an extractor fan, yes - keep it off the wall directly beside the shower or bath, where it will take repeated direct steam. In a small windowless bathroom without ventilation, a canvas is not the best choice for a wall that gets wet.
