What size wall art fits a kitchen?
Smaller than you would use elsewhere. Kitchens have short runs of free wall between cupboards, so 8"x24" (20x60cm) and 12"x36" (30x90cm) do most of the work - horizontally above a worktop or doorway, vertically in the gap beside a tall unit or fridge. Save 16"x48" (40x120cm) for a dining wall or an open-plan kitchen with a clear stretch of wall.
Can you hang canvas art in a kitchen?
Yes, with one sensible precaution: keep it away from the area directly above a hob or sink, where steam and cooking grease collect. Anywhere else in a kitchen is fine. Dust a canvas occasionally with a dry, soft cloth - never a damp one - and it will hold up as well as it would in any other room.
What subjects suit kitchen wall art?
Botanical and herb studies, still life and produce, vintage food illustration, and simple typography all sit well in a kitchen - they suit the room's purpose without being literal about it. Warm palettes of clay, ochre and sage work particularly well against wood, tile and painted cabinetry.
Where can you put art in a kitchen with no free wall?
Look above the doorway, on the end panel of a run of units, in the gap beside a fridge or tall larder unit, and on the short wall above a splashback where a narrow horizontal piece fits under the cupboards. These are all spaces an 8"x24" (20x60cm) canvas will fill that a standard frame simply will not.
What frame works best in a kitchen?
A stretched canvas or a wood or white frame. Kitchens already carry a lot of hard edges and reflective surfaces, so an unglazed canvas keeps the wall softer and avoids glare from downlights and windows. Black frames work in a kitchen with black handles or a dark worktop to answer them; gold rarely suits the room.
