What counts as narrow wall art?
Narrow wall art is a print made longer than it is deep, but with enough depth to hold a detailed image. This collection comes in three sizes - 16"x32" (40x80cm), 20"x40" (50x100cm) and 30"x60" (75x150cm) - and each can be hung either way: as a wide horizontal above a sofa or bed, or as a tall vertical on a hallway or alcove wall. If you need something slimmer still, our Extra Narrow collection runs to a much longer, leaner shape.
Why does normal wall art look wrong on a large empty wall?
Because it is under-scaled. A standard print sized for a hallway looks like a postage stamp on a wall above a three-seater sofa - the eye reads the empty space around it rather than the picture. Filling roughly two-thirds of the available width or height fixes it, which on a long wall usually means a narrow, elongated format rather than a bigger square.
What is the biggest narrow wall art you can get?
In this collection, 30"x60" (75x150cm) - five feet across hung horizontally, or five feet tall hung vertically, with real depth to it. Below that are 20"x40" (50x100cm) and 16"x32" (40x80cm). If you want something longer and leaner instead, the Extra Narrow collection goes up to 24"x72" (60x180cm), which is six feet on the long side.
Can narrow wall art work in a large room?
Yes - scale it up rather than adding more pieces. A single 30"x60" (75x150cm) canvas holds a large wall better than a cluster of medium frames, because one long horizontal line gives the room a clear anchor, and the extra depth of this collection's sizes carries across a big room. In a large open-plan space, use one horizontal above the sofa and one vertical on a nearby pillar or alcove so the two relate without matching.
How much wall space should you leave around narrow wall art?
Leave roughly 4-6in (10-15cm) of clear wall at each end of the piece, and more above and below than you think you need. Narrow formats depend on the empty space around them to read as deliberate; crowd them right up to a corner or a light switch and the balance stops working.
