What wall art works in a narrow hallway?
Tall vertical canvases, hung singly between doors or in a row down the length of the hall. Vertical pieces use the wall height a hallway has rather than the width it does not, and they keep the walkway clear in a way a wide frame cannot. A 12"x36" (30x90cm) or 16"x48" (40x120cm) suits most hallways; 20"x60" (50x150cm) if the ceiling is high.
How do you hang art on a staircase wall?
Follow the line of the stairs rather than the floor. Keep the centre of each piece about 58in (147cm) above the tread directly beneath it, so the artwork climbs at the same angle as the staircase. For a single large piece, hang it on the wall of the half-landing where you can stand back and see it properly.
What size art fits above a hallway console table?
About two-thirds the width of the table. Most console tables take a 16"x48" (40x120cm) horizontal canvas; a narrow hall table suits 12"x36" (30x90cm). Hang the bottom edge 6-10in (15-25cm) above the table top so the two read as a single arrangement rather than two separate objects.
Should hallway art match the rest of the house?
It should connect, not match. A hallway is seen in passing and usually links several rooms, so pick something that shares a palette or a mood with the rooms it leads to rather than repeating any one of them. A run of pieces in the same frame colour is the simplest way to make a hallway feel deliberate without it feeling like a showroom.
How many pieces should you hang in a hallway?
One well-sized piece per wall section usually beats several small ones. In a long hallway, a run of three to five identically framed vertical canvases spaced evenly - about 4-6in (10-15cm) apart - creates rhythm as you walk past. In a short hall or entryway, a single 16"x48" (40x120cm) piece is enough.
